Kalimpong is situated in the state of west
Bengal in India. It is one of the most picturesque hill stations in the
shivalik hills in the Himalayas. The Himalayas is the longest mountain
range in the world. Kalimpong is a part of the district of Darjeeling. Its
nearness to Darjeeling and other hill stations have made it so. Kalimpong
is famous for its flowers and Buddhist monasteries.
The word Kalimpong is Tibetan meaning
assembly of the kings ministers. The elevation of the hills is
1,247 m (4,091 ft). Kalimpong has five distinct seasons spring,
summer, monsoons, autumn, and winter. It is best to visit Kalimpong in
spring and summer since monsoons are very heavy and cause landslide and
winters are very severe. River teesta flows through Kalimpong and
separates Kalimpong from the state of Sikkim. Farming, education and
tourism are the contributors to the economy in Kalimpong.

How to reach Kalimpong? The
nearest airport is Siliguris Bagdogra airport which is at a distance of
80 kilometres or 50 miles. It is situated at 641 kms from kolkatta which
is the nearest metro. The nearest railway station is the new Jalpaiguri
station which is in the outskirts of the town of Siliguri. It is situated
on the national highway of 31-A which connects Gangtok and Siliguri. Taxis
and share taxis are available to travel around the town. Good hotels
include hotel silver oaks, Himalayan hotel and Kalimpong park hotel and it
cost anywhere between INR 1000 -1500 per day.

Army Golf Club

The army golf club is one of the
important tourist attractions. It is an excellent place for
photography. You can focus from all angles at the valleys around and
get classy photos of the Durpin monastery.
This golf club keeps the offices of
the army fit for high altitude soldiering. It is situated on the
outskirts of the town. The army golf course has a nine hole course
and visitors can play a round of golf by paying a small fee.
While at it visitors can enjoy the view of the mountains. It is
heavenly and peaceful at the same time relaxing. |
| Catholic
Church |

The
Catholic Church is the next tourist attraction you would want
to see. It is the largest church in this area.
This church is an establishment made by the Christian missionaries
for the benefit of the local Roman Catholic population.
The church has got
symbols and wall paintings inside which is a
contribution to art and architecture. This church was built in the
period of Raj in the year of 1890. This was designed by Mr. Hardy of
Edinburgh and it was open to public for prayer and worship in
November 1891. it is built in the style of western architecture. |
| Crockety |

It is one of the colonial
bungalows of the British Raj during their rule of India. It is open
to public for viewing. It has excellent architecture and is majestic
looking. It was built by the wool traders of Britain in the 18th
century.
The house is quaint and is found in
the upper section of the town of Kalimpong. Crockety is one among
the favourites in attracting tourist. Just located at the back of
this house is the house of famous poet Rabindranath Tagore. he
broadcast his poem janmadin on the all India radio on his
birthday from this house.

Galingka |

|
Galingka is another of the
colonial houses of the British Raj period. It was built by a wool
trader as Kalimpong is a centre of wool business in east India. It
is situated in the background of Mount Kanchenjunga the second
highest peak in the world in Himalayas.
It is one of the oldest houses built
after Kalimpong became a hill resort. the Galingka house has a
secluded nature garden with a lot of orchids, cacti and mountain
plants and it is just the place to relax on a holiday or to laze
around or watch the butterflies, birds and animals.

Hiking

The hiking comes under the easy
grade. The altitude is less than 1500 m. the hiking takes four days
including sightseeing and rafting. This gives you chance to explore
the forests and the mountain countryside. You can meet people and
interact with them see the terraced cultivation and stay in the
mountain hamlets.
The walking trails are easy and the
stay at the end of the day is comfortable. The trek starts at
bagdogra and ends at lepcha Valley Park. Trekking time is between
three to six hours every day. the trek is good in all seasons except
the monsoon season.

Lava

The lava is situated 34 kms away from
Kalimpong and it is at an altitude of 2350 meters. It is a very
small village always hidden in mists and clouds.it is one of the
oldest known trade routes to the neighbouring Bhutan.
Lava
is surrounded by the pine forest. And there is a monastery which is
of Bhutanese origin. It is home to the Nature Interpretation Centre.
It is the start of the trek to the Neora National Park famous for
its wildlife and flowers and lava leads to the 3,152 metre high
RacheLa tri-junction which connects Sikkim, Bhutan, and West Bengal.

Loleygaon (Kapher)

Loleygaon also called as Kapher is
situated 25 kms from Lava and 52 kms from Kalimpong. This place is
situated along a lovely forest drive. Kapher also has a heritage
forest and lovely view point for the snow ranges of along the
Singalila Range.
It is enchanting and the mode of
travel is by jeeps. There is a guest house called Kaafal guest house
in case you wish or make a choice to stay overnight. It can be
reached by bus from Siliguri. Wildlife watching, bird watching, view
of the Kanchenjunga and the emerald forests are the attractions of
Loleygaon.

Kalimpong Morgan House

Morgan house is one of the
colonial bungalows of the British Raj period situated in the town of
Kalimpong. Morgan house has been converted into a tourist lodge by
the government of India. It was originally the home of a rich jute
merchant from Britain.
The garden is very good and the scenic view of the
mountains from the house is excellent. Morgan house is open for
public viewing. It is now a budget hotel / guest house and is a very
comfortable place to stay. It is a heaven on earth for bird and
wildlife watchers as the marshes around attract
wildlife. |

Nature Interpretation Centre

Nature Interpretation Center is an
Ecological Museum run by the Ministry of Environment and Forest of
India. It is a part of the The Soil Conservation Division. It is run
as a museum. It is located in the complex of the forest office.
The display in the museum includes
samples, photographs and dioramas relating to nature and
conservation.. These depict the relationship between human
activities on the environment. The focus of the museum cum
exhibition in on the flora, fauna and the wildlife of the region. It
is open between 10 am and 4 pm on all days for for the visiting
tourists. |

Neora National Park

Neora national park is a tourist
attraction established in 1986. It is situated near lava. It takes
trek loving tourists a long trek through the enchanting
forests and the exotic flora. At the end of the trek one can
climb the peak called the RacheLa junction (of Bhutan, Sikkim and
West Bengal) to view the Chola Range.
It is called the land of the red
panda. It is a home to many endangered species of animals, birds and
plants like clouded leopard, musk deer, gold naped finch, orchids
and ferns. There is a waterfall in the Rishi Valley below. One can
enjoy the scenic beauty of it.

Rafting

River Rafting is an interesting
activity for adventure seekers. The best season for river rafting is
after the monsoon that is between October and February. The river
Teesta is rugged with a series of quick and turbulent waves. Unique
experience in adventure sport can be found in river rafting in
Kalimpong.
There are rafting courses for swimmers, non-swimmers
and adventure seekers and the time varies from one to three hours
depending on the level of experience. The thrill of a lifetime in

Ringking Farm

Ringking farm is one of the old
colonial bungalows of the British Raj period. It is situated on the
ringking road in the centre of the town of Kalimpong. This house is
situated near the nature interpretation centre and the sericulture
centre. It has a quiet and serene atmosphere and a enchanting view
of the valley below.
It has the old English charm and is
very attractive. The ringking road has many new hotels but none have
the charm of ringking farm. A local sightseeing tour is never
complete without a visit to the ringking farm.It is a good choice
for nature lovers. |

Samco Ropeway

Samco ropeway is situates 20 kms
from Kalimpong. It is on the highway that leads to Siliguri. The
construction of this ropeway was made by the Christian missionaries
for the purpose of spreading the gospel. It is over the spread of
one and half kms and is between the Teesta and Relli Rivers.
It is an adventure and thrill ride and
is situated 120 feet high f the river. The views are mind-blowing
and unforgettable. It is a chance to access the ethnic villages of
the hills, visit the Samthar Plateau, and explore the mountainside
and the Forest of the Himalayas. |

Samthar Plateau

Samathar plateau is one of the
trekking centres and adventure sport lobbies. It is a scenic and
remote plateau situated at 80 kms from Kalimpong at an elevation of
1,400 meters and it is nearer to Lava and is just 45 kms away from
the village of Lava.
It has picture postcard scene which
include wonderful sunrise and sunset, exotic flora and fauna , lush
emerald forests, mountain cascades and streams, breathtaking view of
snow in the shivalik range and kanchenjunga and lakes and
valleys and river pools. It is quiet away from the maddening crowds
of the city and hence is a quiet and serene place.

Sericulture Research Institute

The Sericulture Research Institute
is located on the road up to Kalimpong town in the Darjeeling road
and is an institute for the research and breeding of silkworms.
Expertise knowledge and know-how is provided to interested farmers
who would like to produce silkworms and cultivate mulberry trees and
earn from it.
These silk worm cocoons are eventually bought
back by the institute from the farmers. The visiting time for
tourists is between 9.30 am and 4 PM on all days other plants and
herbs are also produced by the institute and silk is the main
production. This is a boon to the farmers over there.

St.Therasa Church

The largest Roman Catholic
Church in Kalimpong is the St. Theresas church. This church
was built by the local craftsmen of Kalimpong and it resembles
a Gumpa rather than a church. It has wood carvings and
wall paintings in the doors and walls which depict scenes from
the bible but in which personalities resemble that of Buddhist
monks.
There is a lot of Tibetan
influence in the architecture. All the paintings, drawings,
arches and carvings have Mongolian features and are not gothic
structures. This a standing example of fusion
architecture in the late 19th century in India. People
interested in modern art can visit this
church. |
Kalimpong Tashiding

Tashiding is now converted into a
budget hotel by the west Bengal tourism ministry. Earlier it was an
old colonial bungalow built by British traders during the period of
Raj. it is located in the centre of the town and has a nice garden.
It is on view for tourists and it is an excellent location.
This house of tashiding is a glorious
reminder of a graceful past of the British rulers. It is a Victorian
style house like most of the colonial houses that were built during
the days of the British Raj.As it s location is city centric other
facilities can be availed easily. |

Teesta Bazaar

The main bazaar of the town of
Kalimpong is named after the river Teesta. The day to shop in this
bazaar is Saturday and Wednesday when the local craftsmen put there
wares on display to the public.
You can shop for jewellery, tea cups,
lanterns, thankas, cloths and fruits, vegetables, cheese, copper and
silverware, lolly pops, daggers, yeast, footwear, plants and
flowers, shawls and other items. This bazaar is also called tenth
mile by the local people. There also wares from Tibet, Bhutan and
china other than locally produced ones for sale in the local shops.
The market days are called haat. |

Tharpa Choeling Gompa (Monastery)

The tharpa choeling gompa is the
first of the three Buddhist monasteries in Kalimpong. It is a part
of the Gelukpa (yellow-hat) sect of Buddhism. It was built in the
year of 1937.Tharpa choeling gompa is situated on the Tirpai Hill
which is a walk uphill from Deki Lodge.
It takes nearly half an hour to reach
this Buddhist monastery. The present Dalai Lama belongs to this sect
of Buddhism which was established in the 14th century. This is the
newest monastery in the area of Kalimpong and a lot of young monks
are trained in this monastery. One can learn a lot about
Buddhism |

Thongsa Gompa (Bhutanese Monastery)

Thongsa gompa is the oldest
Gumpa and was built during the Bhutanese period. The year dates back
to 1630. It was constructed by the Bhutanese. The monastery was
completed around the year 1692 and it is the oldest monastery in
Kalimpong and still is preserved well.
Every day the monks
offer prayers twice, once in the morning and once in the evening and
the prayers are accompanied by the blowing of conch shells and long
trumpets and beating of the drums. Masked dance ceremony is
performed thrice in a year in the monastery and it is open to public
viewing throughout the day.

Zong Dhog Palri Fo Brang Gompa (Monastery)

The Zong Dhog Palri Fo Brang Gompa
was established in 1970s personally by the Dalai lama himself. The
monastery contains the Kanguyar in 108 volumes which was brought by
the Dalai Lama when he first fled Tibet. It is located five kms
south from the city of Kalimpong.
The wall paintings in the
Gompa are beautiful, impressive and it is traditional Tibetan art.
The prayer hall is full of these paintings all around and there is a
three dimensional mandala in the first floor of the prayer hall. The
view of the peaks and valleys of the Himalayas are excellent and eye
catching.
